Overview
This course aims to introduce the fundamental concepts of digital imaging and the Photoshop interface. You will also be taught recommended workflows and practice key foundation skills such a working with layers and transforming photo objects. You will receive hands-on and interactive instruction from a leading industry experienced tutor along with a copy of the Adobe Photoshop CS6 ‘Classroom in a book’
Audience
This class is designed for students who are new to the Photoshop environment and who prefer hands on, interactive instruction. This course is billed as an ‘introductory’ course and therefore is suitable for beginner/intermediate skill levels however, as we only use the finest industry experienced tutors be rest assured that the course will be specifically tailored to you, whatever your level of knowledge.

Introduction to digital imaging
Pixels, file formats: Jpeg, raw, tiff, DNG, PSD and PDF. Basic colour theory, the colour pickers and gamut.
Workspaces
Understanding Photoshop’s work area, work spaces and menus. Opening and saving images Panels and options. Opening, closing and rearranging panels. Importing, browsing and opening via Bridge. Lightroom integration. Zooming and scrolling in an image window including shortcuts. Undo/history, useful preferences settings. Customising and saving a workspace.
Tools
Main tools and accessing hidden tool groups. Selecting and using tools and tool options.
Selective image editing
Inverting a selection
Workflow
Basic Retouching strategies and the concept of a non-destructive workflow.
Adobe camera RAW
Opening and editing an image in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR). Adjusting global colour and tone.
Basic Adjustments
Resolution and image size, Straightening and cropping, Replacing colour in an image. Using the sponge, Clone and healing tools. Content aware fill for retouching. Applying the unsharp mask filter and common settings for different projects.
Selections
Making selections with various tools including the Magic wand, lasso, and the Quick selection tool. Inverting pixel values. Moving and manipulating selections. Using modifier keys with selections. Deselecting and refining the edges of a selection. Transforming a selected photo-object. Constraining transformations
Introduction to Layers
Working with objects on layers and applying basic layer styles. Renaming layers and moving stacking order. Opacity, visibility and basic layer panel functions.
More Layers
Managing a layered image, creating, viewing, hiding, resizing, rotating, selecting and deleting Layers. Rearranging the layer stack and applying blending modes. Applying gradients, filters and effects to a layer and layer styles.
Retouching a portrait
Introduction to Adjustment layers. Retouching with spot healing and the healing brush. Using the patch tool. Enhancing with dodge, burn and sponge tools. Smoothing skin. Red eye correction. Shadow and Highlight adjustment
Introducing Automated functions
Merging exposures to create a High Dynamic Range image (HDR). Merging a stack to extend depth of field. Using the new Lens correction filter to correct distortion.

Certification
Adobe Training at Alchemea is slightly different from the Avid and Apple models whereby the courses are not designed to
prepare a student for a specific exam. Adobe exams are very demanding and certification is meant to reflect not only a users
understanding of an applications functionality but also their experience as a user. If you wish to work towards certification
