Since pioneering this course back in 2007, Alchemea has built up a huge amount of expertise in delivering hands-on audio mastering training and we are proud that course feedback has been exceptional.

Over the course of the weekend experienced mastering engineer Neil Pickles took a class of 5 students through the fundamental principles of audio mastering. The programme focussed on achieving great quality results with not just the best outboard, but their more affordable / accessible plug-in equivalents.

Tutor Neil Pickles explains:

“The principle aim of this course is to get as close to a Pro Mastering reference as possible, using an affordable set up. As well helping to make your demo’s stand out, we will guide you through the steps of creating a final product ready for market. Additional emphasis is placed on ear training and practical examples involve looking closely at, and dealing with, problems and situations that a Mastering Engineer would encounter.”

The whole course now takes place in our spacious acoustically treated Cinema Room, where we recreate a high-end mastering environment specifically for this class, using the best analogue and digital equipment. This includes award winning Genelec 8260a monitor speakers, mastering outboard by Manley Labs, GML, Neve, Thermionic Culture and Alan Smart - not to mention the best plug-ins by Sonoris, UAD, Sonnox, Flux, FabFilter, Elysia and Waves etc. DAWs used include Soundblade and Pro Tools, although the techniques used could be applied in any DAW.”

Gary Robson of SCV distribution brought down a pair of the hotly anticipated Focal Sm9 Speakers to our Euphonix Cs3000 studio for a day’s demonstration.

Lecturers, Alumni and Students from all classes were invited to drop in over the course of the day and check out well known reference records and indeed their own mixes and productions, through the magnifying glass of these revolutionary new 3 way speakers.

Lecturer Neil Pickles who hosted the event commented “The highlight of the day for me was when one of our current students Darren Lee brought in a mix called “Try” by the band Francobollo who he had recorded and mixed on his course. It was tricky material, very warm in the low end and the SM9’s revealed frequency areas where he could refine his already excellent mix and production.” He went on to say “The effect of any cut or boost we did on the mix buss EQ was instantly presented clearly on the speakers, they were very easy to achieve good results on.”

February 18th -19th saw the inaugural London Electronic Music Event held at Alchemea College in Islington. Ran in conjunction with sample library gurus ‘Sample Magic’, the event was envisaged as being a weekend of production and business master classes given by some of the top names on the electronic music scene.

With the event sold out the doors opened on the Saturday morning and after a welcome talk from successful producer, educator and journalist, Bruce Aisher, delegates worked their way through a host of industry seminars and production workshops aimed at helping the electronic musician further their skills and career.

The business and marketing sessions included sessions on record contracts, identity & branding, how to work the blogs and how to get the best from Sound Cloud. Production workshops included synth programming with NI Massive, mastering, getting bass and kick to work together, mix bus processing as well as taking dance music live, song writing and producing for the stars and drum programming.

Live Room 1 was transformed in to an Aladdin’s cave of Moog synths, mixing desks. outboard gear and Genelec speakers. Thanks also to Propellerhead who presented Reason 6 Master-classes in our Cinema.

To top it off both days culminated in engaging and entertaining Q&A sessions. On Saturday, Toolroom Records label boss Stuart Knight discussed how to build an electronic brand and on Sunday Ben Watt (Everything But The Girl / Buzzin Fly Records) talked about his career and how to survive and thrive in today’s industry. After Ben’s Q&A the party moved down the road to the Wenlock & Essex bar where Ben Watt, Ben Murphy (DJ mag editor) and Hal Ritson (Young Punx) discussed and debated the future of the music industry. Attendees rounded off the weekend by socialising and networking over a few drinks.

“The first ever London Electronic Music Event at Alchemea was a fantastic success, pulling in clubland luminaries from Toolroom Records to Ben Watt to discuss everything from the state of our industry to how to create bigger beats. Over the weekend, 90 people crammed in a host of sessions – the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and the LEME team are already discussing plans to take the show to the next level in 2013. “In London at the end of February I was invited to be part of a panel at the fledgling LEME (London Electronic Music Event), a new weekend of tutorials and networking in the capital, to explore the subject of how to survive in today’s industry. Joining me on the panel were Ben Watt, Label Boss ofd Buzzingf fly, and Hal Ritson of the Young Punx and the Featured Artists Coalition.

It was a seriously stimulating discussion with a packed room, and brought home just how vibrant our scene continues to be, despite the travails of internet piracy and other demons that afflict the music business industry today . It also underlined how much in need of a similar event to WMC London is. Although the LEME is still in it’s early stages, it could potentially be the very thing the capital is crying out for. The more we can bring together producers, label owners, the media and DJ’s to assess ways of moving forward in the industry – whether in the US or the UK, or beyond – the stronger we become.

Final Cut Pro X gets major update: Certification Courses Now Available

Last Week (31st Jan 2012) Apple released Final Cut Pro X v10.0.3, a significant update to its revolutionary professional video editing application. The update introduces multi-cam editing that automatically syncs up to 64 angles of video and photos; advanced chroma keying for handling complex adjustments right in the app; and enhanced XML for a richer interchange with third party apps and plug-ins that support the fast growing Final Cut Pro X ecosystem. Available as a free update from the Mac App Store, Final Cut Pro X v10.0.3 also includes a beta of broadcast monitoring that supports Thunderbolt devices as well as PCIe cards.

In the seven months since launch, the third party ecosystem around Final Cut Pro X has expanded dramatically. XML-compatible software like DaVinci Resolve and CatDV provide tight integration for tasks such as colour correction and media management. The new’ 7toX’app from Intelligent Assistance uses XML to import Final Cut Pro 7 projects into Final Cut Pro X. In addition, some of the industry’s largest visual effects developers, including GenArts and Red Giant, have developed motion graphics plug-ins that take advantage of the speed and real-time preview capabilities of Final Cut Pro X.

Broadcast monitoring in Final Cut Pro X is currently in beta and allows you to connect to waveform displays, vectorscopes, and calibrated, high-quality monitors to ensure that your project meets broadcast specifications. Final Cut Pro X supports monitoring of video and audio through Thunderbolt I/O devices, as well as through third party PCIe cards.

Apple also released minor updates and bug fixes to their groundbreaking ‘Motion 5’ & ‘Compressor’ applications.

With this latest update the app can now be considered a true ‘broadcast ready’ non linear editor. Apple have definitely come good on their promises they made upon launch of the app and if the initial online reviews are anything to go by the pro sector is now sitting up again.
